April is National Stress Awareness Month

Tips for preventing and managing stress.

Stress often manifests as physical symptoms such as fatigue, headaches and muscle tension and can often times lead to serious health issues. While stress is unavoidable for a good majority of us, there are a number of ways to help manage and hopefully prevent stress.

Practice the Big Three

There are three habits that are key to a happy, healthy life:

1. Eating a diet full of fresh, whole foods helps the body combat stress naturally.

2. Getting the right amount of sleep should be a priority. Not getting a proper amount of sleep makes it difficult to deal with stressful situations and can increase anxiety and depression. Try to establish a healthy sleeping routine. Make sure to turn off all electronics at least 30 minutes before bedtime and try to establish a calming nighttime ritual, such as reading or meditating. Creating a ritual will signal your mind to relax and prepare for a restful night’s sleep.

3. Making sure you get a good amount of exercise lowers blood pressure and provides a healthy outlet to relieve stress.

Learn how to relax

It is important to find a way to relax within your day. Meditation and deep breathing are great ways to feel more relaxed and are also easy to do just about anywhere.

Put your feelings on paper

More often than not, almost everyone has a million thoughts running through their head. Try writing them out. Getting the thoughts out of your mind and onto paper will signal your brain that the thought is safe and it no longer needs to hold on to it.

Be proactive

If you are feeling overloaded and worn down, take a step back and look at everything that is going on and see if there are some things that can take a backseat until you feel you have enough energy to deal with them.

Talk about your problems

Often times talking through a problem is all you need to work through a stressful situation. Confiding in a trusted friend or family member can really help in managing stress.

Do something you enjoy

Learning new skills and taking the time to do something you love creates an outlet to relieve stress.

Smile

The best thing of all, which not a lot of people may be aware of, is simply smiling; it can help improve your mood. Laughing is also a great way to beat stress and is clinically proven to be good for your health. Take some time for a laugh break; watch a funny movie/show or video and release those “feel good hormones”!
